The next step in our deck building process is the construction of the footings for the posts to support the far end of the deck. To determine their location, I build some batter boards, pounded them into the ground a couple feet beyond the approximate post locations, leveled the top of the batter boards to the bottom of the ledger board, ran some mason's line out from the ledger to the batter board, then added markers above where the posts need to be.

To keep everything aligned and level, I mounted our fancy rotating laser level directly to the ledger. As it spins, we are able to capture this level all across the yard - the wonders of modern technology!
