Now, concrete-be-goneSunday, May 16, 2010
Looking at the condition of the concrete under the old deck, I realize that its time has come. This is going to increase the scope of this project, but it's got to go.

Well, that?s all of the easy stuff.

Now, about these stairs.

They have always been a bit awkward, as they rise up and to the left after exiting in the basement, which puts you into the corner, rather than out in the yard. It sure would be nice if we could just mirror that, and have them come up to the right. More concrete demolition, anyone? Oh, why not...

If I had to guess, I'd say that wall slab is probably over 900 pounds. I found that the only way to break it up was to drill some random holes in the surface with a carbide masonry bit and the hammer drill, then go at it with the sledgehammer. But it worked.

And now we've got a perfect spot to bury some treasure, or perhaps a body.

For those of you who've played Settlers of Catan, Katherine realized that this is a bit like the resource cards - brick, wood, stone... anyone want to build a city?

I estimate around 16,000 pounds of concrete. And how does it get out of the backyard? Why, with the wheelbarrow, of course. To be continued...
